We Need Cake!

This is my little blog’s One Hundredth Post! It was almost a year ago that I created Ramblings as a way to share stories and images from last October’s month-long road trip. I liked how easy the blog format made it to keep friends filled in on noteworthy events in my life, and I decided to keep it going after the road trip was over. Gradually it has morphed from an infrequently-updated news site, through a brief attempt at writing “mass appeal” posts intended to reach a larger audience, through a painful but cathartic period where I needed to vent emotions that were threatening to overwhelm me, and into its current incarnation, which is basically just a daily glimpse into what’s going on with me and the kids.

Those “mass appeal” posts are still my most popular; every day people visit my site to read about keeping a live Christmas tree in a pot or how to grow decent watermelons (it’s nice to know I’m not the only one who is endlessly frustrated by that task) or which books are good for reading aloud to children. But crafting posts for the general public turned out to have little appeal for me, and I soon lost interest and stopped writing stuff designed to collect Google hits. Actually, as I recall I stopped posting almost entirely for a while there.

Then came all the marital separation drama, and apparently that makes for some fine entertainment because my readership numbers have been rising steadily since I started posting about it in April. I get more visitors in a day now than I used to get in a week.

And while I love the spiking hit stats as much as any blogger, I’ve come to realize that I would continue to post here even if no one came to read at all. The sense of community is wonderful, but at the heart of it I write because I can’t not write. Like almost every other blogger in the world I hope to be a published author one day, and this is where I practice my craft and hone my narrative skills.

So…if you’re new here, welcome! Make yourself at home, invite your friends over, help yourselves to the popcorn and Milk Duds. And if you’ve been here from the beginning…thank you for sticking with me while I was figuring out how this blogging thing works and what I wanted mine to be. Thanks for your comments, your emails and your encouragement. You all so totally rock.

Cake for everyone!

Thursday Thirteen

I don’t usually post memes, but I stumbled across this one this morning and got a good laugh.

The concept is simple: you do a Google search for your own name followed by the word needs. Also, I found that you get better results if you use quotes (ie, my search was for “Debora needs”).

Then you post thirteen things that Google says you need.

I was unable to track down the creator of this meme, or I’d give them credit. Anyway, here we go:

1. Debora needs orderly landscaping.

This is sadly true. A retaining wall or two would do wonders for my sloping property, and heaven knows I need to mow down all that wild buckwheat. One does the best one can, you know.

2. Debora needs one of those UV bulbs to ward off the winter blues.

This is very likely true as well. Most winters, usually sometime in February, I succumb to a deep blue funk that’s at least partly brought on by sunlight deprivation. Maybe I should look into that UV bulb thing.

3. Debora needs an injection every six hours.

HEY NOW! Let’s not get crazy here. Put the needles down and let’s talk about this!

4. Debora needs sunshine!

It’s just like Google knows me.

5. Debora needs help, she is not who she pretends to be.

Damn. Thanks for blowing my cover, Google! }:^(

6. Debora needs money.

This is not strictly true. Steve has been generous and prompt with the child support, and my financial needs are being adequately met.

That said, if I HAD more money, there’s a whole bunch of stuff on my To Do list that would get done a heck of a lot sooner. Like orderly landscaping, for example.

7. Debora needs a new Wheelchair.

Hah! I’m not quite there yet, but thanks for the thought.

8. Debora needs to turn 6 more or gain 150 more Werewolf points to reach the next level: Berserker Werewolf!

Um. Okay.

Berserker Werewolf.

You know, there’s a part of me that’s really drawn to that image.

9. Debora needs some chicken soup.

I certainly wouldn’t turn it down. :^)

10. Debora needs prayers/thoughts.

Yes indeedy, folks. Can I get an amen?

11. Debora needs to create a strict budget.

Dude. It doesn’t get much stricter than this. Seriously.

I mean, I suppose I could remove all the lightbulbs in the house and decree that bedtime is now at dusk, but beyond that I’m not seeing a lot of room for strictifying my budget.

12. Debora needs to fire her mother as her manager.

Had to do that about fourteen years ago, for the sake of my sanity.

13. Debora needs to start eating cheeseburgers again.

Thanks for the concern, Google, but I prefer actual food. Besides, McDonald’s and the rest aren’t exactly hurting from the absence of MY patronage, as far as I can tell.

So there you have it: 13 things Google thinks I need. Try it with your own name, you might get a laugh or two at how well (or little) Google knows you.

So how DOES one earn Werewolf points, anyway? I am so on that.

Enamored

Luke: “My kitten is SO CUTE!”

Me: “She sure is. They’re both very cute.”

Luke: “But I think Stripes is the cutest with her cute little fur and her cute little paws and her cute little face and her cute little eyes and her cute little ears and her cute little tail and her cute little nose and…how can she possibly be SO CUTE?”

Sometimes love comes in very small packages.

Happy Love Thursday, everyone.

Adventures In Cardboard

One of the things I volunteered to do for the Fall Festival fundraiser at the kids’ school was to transform a big cardboard box into a jail cell. The idea is that someone pays a ticket or two to put someone else in jail, and then the jailed person has to pay a ticket or two to get out. Family friendly fun!

So here’s what I made:

The problem is, I can’t figure out how to keep it from blowing away when the wind kicks up, which is very often does in Anza. The structure has to be completely collapsible so it can be transported and stored, so the roof comes off and closes on hinges. I could weight the floor if it had one, but I don’t know how to make a removable floor that can be securely attached to the rest of the thing.

Ideas, anyone? How can I keep my jail from ending up in the next county if the Festival falls on a windy day?
