Shiny

This is my favorite of this year’s Christmas gifts:

It’s from a couple of very old friends, a wryly sympathetic reference to recent circumstances. The symbolism — a dove for peace and faith, flight for freedom, steel for strength — is awesome AND it’s so darn pretty. I may leave it out when I pack away the rest of the holiday stuff.

Hope everyone had a merry Christmas, and here’s hoping for a happy, healthy and prosperous 2010 for all!

A Few of Luke’s Favorite Things

A few days ago as I passed through the living room I overheard Luke singing to himself, to the tune of “12 Days of Christmas.” The part I caught went:

“…Eight Christmas presents, seven…other things…FIVE KITTY CAAAATS, four Taco Men, three family members, two puppy dogs, and a Stripsey to snuuuuugggle.”

The Taco Men thing is a Long Story, and I’m not sure what happened to Six, but it’s nice to know Luke appreciates the good stuff.

Twistered

Gotta love modern technology.

Today I went to a birthday party for the daughter of an old friend. One of the gifts was a Twister game, and after the kids had played with it the adults took a turn. It ended up being a draw between me and my friend Mia, and Mia’s husband snapped a pic of the heated final round with his iPhone.

Within minutes the pic was up on Facebook.

Modern life is like one big reality tv show where everyone is part of the cast and the audience at the same time. I sorta love that.

The Post Office Is Going To Wonder What I was Drinking

When I was at the office store getting my Christmas card images printed, I couldn’t find any stationary envelopes the right size and shape to fit them. I was thinking about ways to solve that problem, and then I saw something shiny and forgot all about the whole envelope thing until yesterday, when I sat down to get my cards signed and ready for mailing. And didn’t have anything to mail them in. They’re too big for me to make envelopes for them with standard-size paper, and the only oversized stuff I have is tracing paper, which isn’t postal-system friendly. And if I don’t get these cards mailed out soon they may not all get where they’re going in time, because I’m a slacker and took way too long to get the pics finished.

What I’m getting at is that if you receive a card from me this Christmas and it’s wrapped in gift-wrap paper or part of a brown paper bag or somesuch, I’m not trying to be even more eccentric than usual. It’s what I could scrounge up. Because late Christmas cards Aren’t Jolly.

On the other hand, you’ll instantly know which card is from me without even having to read the return address. Like a unique snowflake in your mailbox.

So remember: they’re not “different.” They’re SPECIAL. You’re welcome.
