Christmas

These Small Hours

This one is dedicated to two of my fellow bloggers, who are having (separate and unrelated) rough times right now and are looking for some happy.

********************

The first time I ever heard Rob Thomas’ song “Little Wonders” was shortly after Steve and I separated. I immediately downloaded it from iTunes and played it over and over for weeks. It seemed to be speaking directly to the tangled knot of pain and hope that had taken up residence in my chest, and I wanted the knot to hear and believe, and maybe loosen its grip a little.

For a long time (like, until just the past couple of months), it was difficult for me to look at photos taken during that first year or so after the split. You could see the hope and the growing glimmers of peace and joy in those images, but my memories of the raw underlying pain were still too fresh. I looked at those pictures and remembered just putting one foot in front of the other in a determined effort to get through the tunnel and into the light.

I’ve been out of the tunnel for a while now, but I still love that song. It’s full of truth and light and strength, and if you’re ever going through a difficult time you should add it to your favorite playlists and listen to it until the sunshine comes back.

All of this is to explain that today’s Love Thursday post is in video form, and also to express my gratefulness that even the first half of the video makes me smile now instead of making my stomach hurt. Always a bonus. I’m hoping it can bring a smile or two to anyone else who needs one today.

So now, without further ado:

Happy Love Thursday everyone, and special virtual hugs go out to Jenny and Mir. Things will get better. You are loved by so many.

Shiny

This is my favorite of this year’s Christmas gifts:

It’s from a couple of very old friends, a wryly sympathetic reference to recent circumstances. The symbolism — a dove for peace and faith, flight for freedom, steel for strength — is awesome AND it’s so darn pretty. I may leave it out when I pack away the rest of the holiday stuff.

Hope everyone had a merry Christmas, and here’s hoping for a happy, healthy and prosperous 2010 for all!

A Few of Luke’s Favorite Things

A few days ago as I passed through the living room I overheard Luke singing to himself, to the tune of “12 Days of Christmas.” The part I caught went:

“…Eight Christmas presents, seven…other things…FIVE KITTY CAAAATS, four Taco Men, three family members, two puppy dogs, and a Stripsey to snuuuuugggle.”

The Taco Men thing is a Long Story, and I’m not sure what happened to Six, but it’s nice to know Luke appreciates the good stuff.

The Post Office Is Going To Wonder What I was Drinking

When I was at the office store getting my Christmas card images printed, I couldn’t find any stationary envelopes the right size and shape to fit them. I was thinking about ways to solve that problem, and then I saw something shiny and forgot all about the whole envelope thing until yesterday, when I sat down to get my cards signed and ready for mailing. And didn’t have anything to mail them in. They’re too big for me to make envelopes for them with standard-size paper, and the only oversized stuff I have is tracing paper, which isn’t postal-system friendly. And if I don’t get these cards mailed out soon they may not all get where they’re going in time, because I’m a slacker and took way too long to get the pics finished.

What I’m getting at is that if you receive a card from me this Christmas and it’s wrapped in gift-wrap paper or part of a brown paper bag or somesuch, I’m not trying to be even more eccentric than usual. It’s what I could scrounge up. Because late Christmas cards Aren’t Jolly.

On the other hand, you’ll instantly know which card is from me without even having to read the return address. Like a unique snowflake in your mailbox.

So remember: they’re not “different.” They’re SPECIAL. You’re welcome.

Ornamentum A Corpus

We did the unthinkable this year. We bought a cut Christmas tree instead of a living one.

We didn’t plan it that way. Monday after school the kids and I cruised the local nurseries looking for our perfect tree: a smallish spruce or fir that we could repot into The Christmas Planter and reuse for two or three years. But the economy has been brutal on local businesses, and the pickings were slim; mostly long-needled pines topiaried into cone-shapes (bleah) or blue spruces (am I the only one who thinks that color is all wrong for Christmas and clashes with the decorations?). But we did find this pretty thing:

Cons: No roots. No planting outside. Pros: $60–$90 cheaper than a comparable living tree. It fit in my car, more or less. About 100 lbs lighter than it would have been attached to a pot full of soil. Fills the whole house with the fresh scent of sap oozing out of its poor severed stump. And after Christmas — firewood!

Okay, so I’m not quite comfortable with the whole dead-tree thing. But I think this year it was a good choice for us.

The tree-decorating custom in our house is that I put the lights on while the kids are at school, and then they get to hang the ornaments on it when they get home. I mention this to explain why our tree looks as though it was decorated by children. It was, and I love it that way.

Merry Christmas, everyone!
